dairy free feta cheese from German supermarkets

As a lifelong feta lover turned vegan, I've spent months hunting down the best dairy free feta cheese options in Germany - the ones that actually taste like the real deal. After sampling nearly every option on the market, here's my honest verdict.

Please keep in mind: this is all about personal taste. Everyone's feta dreams are a little different, right? After trying pretty much every dairy-free feta I could find in German supermarkets, here's my personal ranking; the ones that taste closest to the real, salty, crumbly deal.

A Little Plea for Homemade Vegan Feta

Before we jump into store-bought picks, I've got to say it: making your own vegan feta at home is so worth it. I still haven't found a single organic vegan feta in stores. And while some of the options below are seriously tasty, they usually come with long ingredient lists, including acidity regulators, flavorings, or modified starch.

Homemade vegan feta cheese

Homemade can be a great option. Here's why I love my quick macadamia-based vegan feta:

  • It comes together fast.
  • You actually know what's in it - and it's all good stuff.
  • It tastes super close to the real thing.
  • It's fiber-rich (thanks, psyllium husks!).
  • It's soy- and tofu-free.
  • And bonus: it holds up when baked or grilled. No melty mess.

Dairy-Free Feta Cheese Options in Germany

Okay, sometimes you just want a Greek salad now ... no time for homemade vegan feta, no waiting. Just quick, salty goodness from the store.

Good news: Germany's got options. These are the ones you'll actually find on shelves. And yes, most of them taste (and look) surprisingly close to the real deal. (Except Taifun FETO. It's its own thing. More on that below.)

I didn't just focus on taste (and texture), I also did a melt test. Because just like real feta, we don't want our dairy-free feta to melt when baked. I'm thinking of that viral baked feta pasta with cherry tomatoes, or maybe baked feta with roasted butternut.

Roasted squash and vegan feta

So, here they are, my top picks of dairy free feta cheese from the supermarket.

dairy free feta cheese in Germany

My Veggie Hirtengenuss by Edeka

  • Flavor & Texture: The overall flavor winner. The texture is virtually indistinguishable from dairy feta: perfectly crumbly, brilliantly white, and with ideal saltiness. A superb choice for salads or bread.
  • Melt Test: NOT suitable for baking/grilling. It melts completely under heat.
  • Main Drawback: The only downside is its limited availability (Edeka only).
  • Availability: Only available at Edeka (Edeka's own private label).

Patros Pflanzlich Natur

  • Flavor & Texture: Solid taste, but I noticed a very slight bitter aftertaste. Patros is known for Greek specialties, and this delivers a decent, firm texture.
  • Melt Test: Suitable for baking/grilling. It holds its shape and does not melt under heat.
  • Main Drawback: The slight bitterness may not appeal to everyone.
  • Availability: Available in all major supermarkets (Rewe, Edeka, Kaufland).

Simply V Hirte

  • Flavor & Texture: Similar to Patros; it's solid and tasty, but also carries that slight bitter note. I generally love Simply V slices, but this Feta alternative is just "okay."
  • Melt Test: Suitable for baking/grilling. It holds its shape well when exposed to heat.
  • Main Drawback: Subtle bitter taste; comparable to Patros.
  • Availability: Available in all major supermarkets (Rewe, Edeka, Kaufland).

Bedda Hirte

  • Flavor & Texture: The taste is good, but the texture is the main issue: it's too smooth and lacks the characteristic crumbliness of real feta. You can tell it relies heavily on starch binders. Could also be saltier. Yet, big plus: It's actually fermented.
  • Melt Test: NOT suitable for baking/grilling. It melts easily when exposed to heat.
  • Main Drawback: Consistency is too smooth.
  • Availability: Available in all major supermarkets (Rewe, Edeka, Kaufland).

Did you notice that many of these dairy-free feta cheese alternatives contain the German word "Hirte" in their names? It literally means shepherd. I guess it's a fitting marketing choice because Feta is traditionally made by shepherds? Well, it definitely brings those lovely, bucolic images to mind.

Vairy Salad Cheese Alternative

  • Flavor & Texture: This lesser-known brand ranks similarly to the Bedda Hirte in terms of taste and texture: generally acceptable but slightly too smooth and unremarkable.
  • Melt Test: NOT suitable for baking/grilling. It melts when heated.
  • Main Drawback: Texture is lacking; availability is more limited than others.
  • Availability: Kaufland.

The Healthy Exception: Taifun FETO

This product is the outlier and a bit like a (good) April Fool's joke. The name FeTo definitely suggests a vegan feta based on tofu (FE of FEta, TO of TOfu). But that's misleading: the name actually stands for FErmented TOfu.

If you expect the flavor and texture of feta, you will be disappointed. However, if you know it's simply marinated, fermented tofu, it's a fantastic purchase!

  • Flavor & Texture: Lightly salty with a mild, fermented taste.
  • Protein Content: Due to the tofu base, it has a very high protein content.
  • Usage: It's a great addition to almost any dish. I love using it alongside one of the other feta alternatives for an extra protein boost.
  • Melt Test: Suitable for baking/grilling. It holds its shape perfectly.
  • Availability: Available in all organic supermarkets (Denns, Alnatura) and sometimes at Rewe.

Which One to Pick When?

Best Taste & Texture

My Veggie Hirtengenuss (Edeka): Tastes closest to the original feta.

Best for Baking/Grilling

Patros, Simply V, or Taifun FETO: These contain either nuts (almonds) or tofu, preventing them from melting easily (unlike the starch-bound alternatives). Or go for my home-made version.

Richest in Protein

Taifun FETO: Does not replicate feta but provides a terrific texture and protein kick as an addition to your dishes.

Healthiest Option

None of the store-bought options (except Taifun FETO). The other alternatives are not organic and contain long ingredient lists with stabilizers. This is the main reason I recommend making vegan feta at home if you have a few minutes.
