The other week, a friend sent a text that made me beam:
"Life is so joyful in the littlest sizes and moments. You are my joy fairy."
Isn't that the loveliest thought? I've never particularly seen myself as a joy fairy, but how wonderful to be one for somebody! It's the warmest feeling.
We often think that to support someone, we need big gestures. Big gifts. Big vacations together. Something extra special or expensive. But being a joy fairy is actually much quieter. It's about the "littlest sizes," the small acts of kindness, and those everyday ways of spreading joy.
What Is a Joy Fairy?
I looked it up. Of course I did. I wanted to see if there was a roadmap for this cute title. But none of the dictionaries I know has a definition. Yet they really should. So I turned to AI and asked what the Oxford English Dictionary's entry would be. Here's the result … which I think is quite fitting, exactly what I imagine a joy fairy to be.
Joy Fairy /ˈdʒɔɪ fɛːri/
noun (informal, chiefly figurative)
- A person who habitually seeks out and shares small instances of happiness, beauty, or wonder, especially as a means of supporting others through periods of difficulty or mundane routine.
"She brought me flowers on a rainy Tuesday; she truly is a joy fairy." - One who excels in the appreciation of "the littlest sizes": the minor, often overlooked aesthetic or emotional details of daily life.
- (In interpersonal relationships) A friend or loved one who acts as an emotional catalyst, lifting the spirits of others through spontaneous gestures rather than grand or formal actions.
What do you think? Should this entry be in the Oxford English Dictionary?
How to Be a Joy Fairy (a.k.a. How to Spread Joy)
So, a joy fairy is someone who lifts your mood. I hope you have such a person in your life. Maybe you are a joy fairy for someone, too?

I think, it's actually the "littlest" things that can turn you into a joy fairy. Just small acts of kindness, a tiny gesture, a thoughtful moment can spread joy. Especially when it happens surprisingly.
These are some ideas:
- Send a small gift you know they would enjoy (quite literally why my friend dubbed me a joy fairy - I bought her a mug I knew she would love).
- Send a funny video (cat, dog, little kids, penguins, any of these short, uplifting videos).
- Text your friend "You've got this" right before a stressful meeting with their boss is coming up.
- Ask how a doctor's appointment went if you know about it.
- Be extra friendly to the cashier who seems overworked.
- Give a generous tip where you can see the staff is struggling.
- Do the laundry, dishes, or house chores for a tired friend.
- Bring a tiny surprise for your partner or kids from town when shopping.
- Invite someone over for a cup of tea when you know they need a chat.
Anything unexpected can bring someone immeasurable joy. Anything that makes their life easier or lifts their spirits. It doesn't cost a fortune or a lot of time, just a bit of consideration.
A Real-Life Joy Fairy Inspiration
Right now for me, Stephanie Jarvis is a joy fairy. She's the chatelaine behind The Chateau Diaries YouTube channel and truly feels like someone who sprinkles joy wherever she goes.
Her current Advent Diaries are so much fun. If you need a little holiday cheer and a sweet lesson in how to brighten someone's day, watch one of Stephanie Jarvis' YouTube videos - especially this year's Lalanders Christmas Party!.
The beautiful thing is this: when you lift someone else's mood, you lift your own.
So, who is the joy fairy in your life? Let them know today! Who's joy fairy are you?
Wishing you planty of little joy fairies in your life,
Ramona

A lovely thought ideed. And beautiful to be a Joy Fairy to someone. I would vote for it to be in Oxford Dictionary, but maybe until then a way can be to use it with other people and to spread it like this. I'm stil looking for the male equivalent.(something like guardian angel is too much, joy boy is too less). You wrote so many inspired things here. Small moments of life can bring so much joy.
P.S. Happy Holidays for you and the loved ones!

This is such a heartwarming comment, thanks, Ovidiu! What a fun, creative way to come up with 'Joy Boy'. I actually had a good laugh when I read it because it reminds me so much of another phrase with 'boy' that is definitely in the Oxford Dictionary (just with one letter difference at the start! 😉).
