When to START Watching
The ultimate question: When is it okay to start watching Christmas movies?
How long before December 24th is an acceptable time? Would you start as early as October? EARLIER!!? Is November a good time? Or do you need it to be December?
I admit I can watch some movies even in August (which I do – take the first on the list), while others evoke such a Christmassy vibe that I couldn't possibly enjoy them any other time (take the last on the list, it's forever intertwined with the holiday season in my mind).
But really, when do you start watching?
For me, it's November. That's the gloomiest month in Germany, where I live.
The golden October days are gone, twinkling Christmas decorations haven't yet been put up, and I need some boost for my mood. So: Perfect time for light, heartwarming, good Christmas movies.
Come December, nothing can stop me: I'm fully immersed in the holiday vibes and intensifying this feeling with countless Holiday movies.
Over the years, I've indulged in my fair share of festive season movies, putting me in a good position to sift out the exceptional (and more alternative ones) from those that don't quite leave a lasting impression.
Before I get to my list of top 10 Christmas movies, let's discuss something really fun: What's your tradition around watching Christmas movies?
Unwrapping Christmas Movies TRADITIONS
I love how everyone has their unique Christmas movie traditions. My uncle swears by Home Alone - a classic that's earned its spot as the go-to Christmas movie. Meanwhile, the timeless black & white classic, It's a wonderful life, holds the title of the #1 Christmas movie of all time.
Some prefer immersing themselves in magical worlds throughout the season, establishing cherished traditions around entire series like Harry Potter.
For years, I had a special ritual of counting down to Christmas with the Lord of the Rings (the extended version). Each Advent weekend, one DVD set – a delightful balance between baking and movie magic.
But what about single movies? They're convenient, time-friendly, and they effortlessly transport you into that cozy Christmassy feeling.
I've grown to appreciate 10 movies that are rather offbeat Christmas picks.
What's OFFBEAT About These Top 10 Christmas Movies
Most of the movies on this list share a strong connection to the holiday season.
I consider them to be offbeat or alternative choices because they don't immediately come to mind when you think of classic Christmas movies (like Home Alone, It's a Wonderful Life, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, or even Die Hard).
All the movies I've selected for this list are so exceptional that they've either already achieved classic status or are poised to do so.
Yet, they're not as widely seen or familiar to most audiences, offering a delightful surprise and the potential to become the new Christmas movies you watch every year.
You'll find a diverse range of films represented, from lighthearted Christmas comedies to heartwarming British Christmas films, family-friendly animated Christmas tales, fantastical adventures, and reimagined adaptations of beloved Christmas classics.
The ONE thing they have in common? They'll boost your mood, leaving you rejoicing and joyful, with a smile on your face.
Here We Go: Top 10 CHRISTMAS MOVIES to Watch
These are my top 10 Christmas movies with an offbeat touch that I can rewatch over and over again.
I've arranged my Christmas movie recommendations chronologically by the year each movie was released.
While I attempted to place 'The Best' at the top, the truth is, I couldn't possibly choose, as I believe each one is the cream of the crop for Christmas watching.
I hope you discover a hidden gem to enjoy during the festive season.
1. Last Christmas (2019)
Picture this: Kate (Emilia Clark), an employee in an elf costume at a year-round Christmas store, has misplaced her zest for life.
Enter: A mysterious stranger named Tom (Henry Golding).
The result: A heartwarming romantic comedy that'll tug at your heartstrings.
No spoilers, but brace yourself for a heart-wrenching twist that adds an extra layer of longing to the charm of Last Christmas.
Emilia Clark and Henry Golding bring their A-game, making you wish this whimsical story never had to end.
What makes "Last Christmas" truly offbeat? The fusion of romance, comedy, and a dash of magic, all against the colorful backdrop of a Christmas store.
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Heartwarming romantic comedies, magical Christmas tales, unexpected twists, enchanting performances by Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding, Emma Thompson, and Michelle Yeoh, British movies, London, George Michael songs
2. Stardust (2007)
Adapted from Neil Gaiman's fantasy novel, Stardust is undoubtedly one of the most captivating and entertaining movies.
To be sure, it's the odd one out on this list as it's not directly tied to Christmas. Yet, what a blast! Jam-packed with action, romance, comedy, and magic.
The story? Young Tristan's on a mission to catch a fallen star for his crush. But it's no walk in the park. Princes, witches, sky-roaming pirates, and a celestial showdown – his adventure is a rollercoaster of surprises.
Tristan's romantic mission turns into a full-blown epic adventure that'll blow your mind.
The storytelling is on point, and so are the performances of the stellar cast. Just to name a few: Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Henry Cavill, Sienna Miller, Claire Danes, Charlie Cox, and Ben Barnes. But really, I could list the whole cast here; they are all exceptional.
And Michelle Pfeiffer's look into the mirror? Iconic! Up and down her body with that certain "UUUUH, I LIKE what I see!" I wish everybody would shoot themselves this look once in a while.
The offbeat charm lies in "Stardust's" ability to transport viewers to a fantastical realm where regular folks and magical beings collide.
This fantasy gem has become a Christmas favorite because it's so much fun to watch - the story is as captivating as a fireside tale in the middle of winter that everyone would love to listen to (or watch).
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Charming fantasy adventures, suspenseful tales, visually stunning realms, incredible actors, heart-warming romances, humorous feel-good movies, witty dialogues, family-friendly Christmas movies
3. Hogfather (2006)
Inspired by Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, Hogfather explores a fantastical realm where the Hogfather (think Discworld's Santa) mysteriously disappears.
Now, who steps into those big boots? None other than the least adequate creature around: Death himself (voiced by Ian Richardson)!
Joining him are Death's granddaughter (Michelle Dockery) and Hogfather's funny little helper Albert (David Jason), all working overtime to make Hogswatch (Discworld's take on Christmas) happen.
Admittedly, the story takes a dip into dark waters at times, but it's as entertaining as it gets - a quirky and humorous trip through the wondrous world of Hogswatch. (And, no, you don't need to be a Discworld expert to take part in the fun.)
The offbeat allure of "Hogfather" lies in its irreverent humor and fantastical twist on holiday traditions.
If you're searching for a Christmas movie that's delightfully different, this choice is your ticket to a unique kind of holiday magic! Plus, it's a double treat since it's made up of two films.
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Fantasy holiday tales, whimsical Discworld adaptations, offbeat and humorous Christmas stories, irreverent holiday humor, quirky characters, a unique take on festive traditions, Terry Pratchett's fantasy world
4. Serendipity (2001)
Serendipity navigates the serendipitous encounters between Jonathan (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale), who meet on Christmas Eve and part ways - only to leave their future to fate.
The offbeat allure comes from the film's exploration of destiny and chance against a Christmas backdrop.
If you're enjoying Christmas movies based in New York with a deeply romantic touch, "Serendipity" should be your choice.
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Whimsical romantic comedies, serendipitous love stories, iconic New York City settings, heartwarming tales of fate and chance, holiday decorations, the ambiance of Christmas in a city setting, John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale
5. A Christmas Carol (1999)
Just like every timeless classic (take "Little Women", #7 on this list), there are numerous movie adaptations of Charles Dickens' iconic Christmas tale.
Yet, I find A Christmas Carol from 1999 outshining the others (I know) for several reasons. Firstly, Patrick Stewart's portrayal of the greedy miser Ebenezer Scrooge is outstanding, complemented by a robust supporting cast.
Secondly, the film stays remarkably true to Dickens' original narrative, preserving the essence of the story, characters, and Victorian setting. It perfectly captures the Dickensian world as I've always imagined it.
We know the story: On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, teaching him what truly matters in life (that is, not money, but generosity, kindness, and joy).
If you're a hardcore fan of the tale and enjoy a good read during the Christmas season, I recommend reading Charles Dickens' novella. For many years, it's been my tradition to re-read just shortly before Christmas; it's so much fun. And, of course, there are even more nuances to discover than in a movie, no matter how well and true to the original it is—just take the well-known sentence "Old Marley was as dead as a doornail" at the beginning of the novella.
And: If you can't get enough of "A Christmas Carol" (understandably so) you can watch the movie adaptation from 1984; it's considered one of the best.
The offbeat charm arises from the story's weightiness (it's challenging to witness everything that Scrooge missed in his life and how it would unfold if he didn't change), yet it is beautifully told and interspersed with many light scenes.
Speaking of which: Does anyone know a Mr. Fezziwig? I'd be delighted to be a guest at his merry parties.
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Classic Christmas tales with a timeless feel, faithful movie adaptations, period dramas set in Victorian England, incredible performances by Patrick Stewart and Richard E. Grant, heartwarming stories of redemption, the charm of a snowy Victorian Christmas
6. Beauty and the Beast. The Enchanted Christmas. (1997)
Everyone knows and loves the enchanting fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. This animated Disney version, however, adds a sparkling Christmas adaptation to the mix.
In preparation for a secret Christmas celebration, the castle's magical creatures unite to throw a festive gathering for Belle—against the wishes of the lord of the castle.
Will they succeed? Will they soften the Beast's heart and celebrate the best Christmas ever?
One thing is certain: there will be lots of laughter, jokes, plenty of colorful Christmas baubles, and oh, the music! If that doesn't touch your heart, then, well ... I don't know what will.
This is a movie for all Christmas enthusiasts, regardless of age (Disney fan or not).
It brings a sparkle to every pair of eyes! It's magical through and through!
The offbeat charm lies in the unconventional pairing of an animated Disney fairytale musical with the festive spirit.
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Enchanting fairy tales, magical Christmas celebrations, Disney animated classics, heartwarming transformations, timeless romance, festive decorations, and unforgettable musical songs, Christmas movies for kids
7. Little Women (1994)
There have been numerous movie adaptions of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott's timeless tale, but the 1994 one stands out. It's not just the remarkable lineup (Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes) - it also stays true to the original story.
When I watch the March sisters grow up, face challenges, and stick together, it feels like I'm part of their loving family. Every time I rewatch the movie, I can sense the joy, sorrow, and dreams of the four sisters.
Given that the film has pivotal scenes set during Christmas and beautifully captures the warmth of family ties (along with sharing and caring), it deserves a spot on this list of top 10 Christmas movies.
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Timeless literary adaptations, period dramas set during the American Civil War, strong ensemble performances, heartfelt coming-of-age tales, the warmth of family Christmas celebrations
8. Groundhog Day (1993)
Groundhog Day unfolds the time-loop shenanigans of Phil Connors (Bill Murray), a weatherman forced to relive the same day repeatedly.
Bill Murray's depiction of how Phil Connors lives like there's no tomorrow cracks me up time after time.
Of course, Phil Connors gets his act together in the end and turns from a cynical guy into a genuinely loving and lovable person.
While not your typical December fare (Groundhog Day is in February), its lessons of redemption and self-discovery, coupled with a dash of Christmas spirit (think piles of fluffy snow and cozy warmth with steamed-up windows), make it a gorgeous seasonal favorite.
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Time-loop comedies with a twist, Bill Murray's comedic brilliance, quirky romantic movies set in a small snowy town, thought-provoking stories on redemption and self-discovery, Andy MacDowell
9. Little Lord Fauntleroy (1980)
There's no German Christmas television lineup without the classic airing of Little Lord Fauntleroy from 1980.
Just before Christmas and during the holiday season, this movie takes the spotlight.
I'll admit, it's the final nudge I need to fully embrace the festive spirit—especially when Cedric, the Little Lord, extends his warm Christmas wishes to everyone at the end of the film.
For those unfamiliar, the story revolves around young Cedric Errol (Ricky Schroder), who unexpectedly inherits the title of Earl, moves to England, and manages to thaw the heart of his initially stern and cold-hearted grandfather (Alec Guinness).
The offbeat touch comes from the film's vintage charm and the heart-melting kindness of little Cedric. Themes of family, kindness, and tradition unfold against the backdrop of a majestic Victorian castle, creating a truly enchanting Christmas experience.
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Heartwarming period dramas set in Victorian England, endearing tales of unexpected inheritances and family bonds, exceptional performances by Ricky Schroder and Alec Guinness, charming English countryside landscapes, Victorian Christmas celebrations, British movies
10. Three Nuts for Cinderella (1973)
Sometimes known as Three Wishes for Cinderella, this imaginative and visually stunning Czech adaptation of the classic fairy tale is familiar to (almost) every German.
Similar to "Little Lord Fauntleroy," Three Nuts for Cinderella (I'll stick to this version as it's closer to the German title "Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel") graces German public TV screens every Christmas.
In fact, Christmas wouldn't feel the same in Germany without this movie on one of the public German TV channels.
The soundtrack is exceptional as well. The moment I hear the first notes of the main song, I immediately recognize it. The music conjures images of glittering, glistening snow-covered fields in the sun.
Oh, and I've never seen a Cinderella (Libuše Šafránková) so vibrant and independent—she rides, she hunts, she competes with others, she defies her stepmother, she pursues the prince. She simply dares to do a lot.
The offbeat charm lies in the film's fairy-tale magic, blending Cinderella's timeless story with enchanting winter wonderland settings.
So! No wonder a movie from 1973 has become a Christmas classic. (It's that enchanting!)
Unfortunately, I haven't come across an English-translated version of the movie, but you can watch it on Amazon Prime (in Czech or German) with English subtitles.
❤️ Watch it if you like:
Fairy tales, enchanting winter wonderlands, strong women, Eastern European visuals, memorable music, classic Cinderella stories, timeless romance, vintage charm
