This plum compote is wonderfully low-maintenance and forgiving. Just a handful of ingredients, simmered in one pot.

This is the dessert you didn't know you were missing. It's perfectly spiced, naturally sweet, and just the thing in a bowl you'll want to wrap your hands around on a cooler day.

Why This Plum Compote Is Naturally Sweet

The secret to its natural sweetness are plums, of course, along with dried figs and a splash of orange juice.

Add the warmest trio of spices - cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom - and you're done.

And while these spices might whisper "Christmas," this compote is truly for any day of the year that calls for a little extra comfort. Served warm with a scoop of melty vegan vanilla ice cream = absolutely divine.

And while it's cozy, it's not being heavy. It can be that light, sweet finish you want after a big, satisfying meal.

And of course you can have it for breakfast. It's wholesome and nutritious enough, even if it's technically dessert (and it's incredible over overnight oats).

Ingredients

Metric - US Customary
  • 550 - 600 g plums (I used a round variety, but you can go for any sweet plums you can get)
  • 150 g dried figs about 8-10 figs
  • 300 ml orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 5 cloves
  • 5 cardamom pods
  • 3 tablespoons Sherry optional

Instructions

  • Wash your plums, cut them in half, and remove the pits.
  • Finely chop the dried figs, making sure to remove those tough stems.
  • In a medium pot, combine the chopped figs, orange juice, sherry (if you're using it!), cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Cover and cook over low heat for about 10 minutes, just until the figs get nice and soft.
  • Add the plums to the pot, cover it again, and let everything gently simmer for another 10 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from the heat. Grab a spoon and fish out the cloves and cardamom pods. Or, if you want to make it super easy, you can tie them in a spice bag before you start!
  • Serve it warm or hot. Enjoy!

Perfect Pairing for This Plum Compote

I'm a happy person with just a bowl of this plum compote. But it wouldn't be right not to mention that this compote is basically the social butterfly of the dessert world - it loves to hang out with all sorts of other delicious things, like:

  • Overnight oats
  • Muesli
  • Smoothie bowls
  • Pancakes (vegan, of course!)
  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Sponge cake (and this Romanian pear & walnut cake)
  • Rice pudding
  • Plain yogurt

Seriously, it's also fantastic served on a slice of hearty bread with a little vegan butter or ricotta. Yum!

FAQs

Can I replace the figs in this plum compote?

You could swap them for dried apricots or dates. The flavor will be a little different, but it'll still be delicious.

Can I eat it cold?

Why not? Enjoy it whichever way you like.

How long can I store it?

Let it cool completely, then pop it in an airtight container in the fridge. It'll stay good for 4-5 days.

Can I freeze it?

Yes! Freeze it in portions and just defrost gently when you're ready to eat.

Prunes in US are dried plums, not fresh plums.

Thanks for the explanation, Elissa, this is very helpful. I exchanged 'prunes' for 'plums' in the recipe as it calls for fresh plums.
